The Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) intends to release an Expression of Interest (EOI) on 1 July 2024 followed by a Request for Tender (RFT) in October 2024, for a construction contractor for the Stage 2 Main Works of the Northern Hospital Redevelopment Project (NHRP).

The new ED and IPU Tower will provide critical and urgent ED and IPU care capacity for the Northern Hospital catchment area. The new facilities will reflect contemporary and flexible models of care and deliver:

• Operational efficiency for staff and improved wayfinding, access and convenience for patients;
• Critical and urgent care capacity for the Northern Hospital catchment area;
• Functional connections to other services on the Northern Hospital campus; and
• Future expansion capacity for the campus.

These works will be at the Northern Hospital in Epping and the scope is for the construction of a new Emergency Department (ED) and Inpatient Unit (IPU) Tower.

The Stage 2 Main Works of the NHRP will deliver a new ED and IPU tower fronting Cooper Street, including:

• Emergency Department
• Adult Short Stay Unit (SSU),
• Pediatric SSUs,
• Mental Health Hub,
• 32 bed Emergency Observation Unit,
• 64 bed Inpatient Unit (IPU)
• A link connecting the ED/IPU building to the Northern Hospital’s new Mental Health building
• Cardiac Catheterisation Lab Shell and ICU Shell
• Shell space for one additional floor of IPU and future proofing for potential future vertical Inpatient Tower 2 construction

Stage 2 will also include small area of minor refurbishment of part of the existing hospital, decanting of existing functions, partial demolition of the existing hospital and connection between the new ED/IPU to existing hospital.

Commencement of Stage 2 Main Works will follow the completion of the Ambulatory Care Centre (Stage 1). Early and enabling works for Stage 2 will be required.
