17 July 2024 will mark ten years since the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, in which all 298 passengers and crew were tragically killed, including 38 people who called Australia home. To mark this solemn occasion, the Australian Government will host a commemoration at Parliament House, to which Next of Kin of the Australian victims are invited. The MH17 Commemoration Support Package 2024 is a demand-driven grant program that provides one-off payments to support Next of Kin of the Australian victims of the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 to travel to attend the commemoration in Canberra on 17 July 2024. Where applicable, nominated support persons of Next of Kin may also be eligible for grant funding.
The objective of the grant program is to facilitate Next of Kin to be able to come together in Canberra to remember their loved ones. The grant payments will vary, depending on the departure location ($700-$1400). There will be a limit of four Next of Kin for each victim, consistent with the previous MH17 Family Support Package, with scope for the consideration of special circumstances for more Next of Kin to attend. Requests for additional financial assistance will also be considered if there are special circumstances. The grant program will provide up to A$200,000 in funding. Services Australia will deliver the grants program.
The grant opportunity will open on 21 May and close on 3 June 2024.
