Wollombi Road Upgrade Project Stage 1 - Detailed Design

⁠⁠⁠This Detailed Design and Engineering consultancy is associated with the Wollombi Road Upgrade Project (WRUP) which runs from Abbotsford Street in the south-west to Vincent Street in the north-east in Cessnock, NSW.

The upgrade’s primary objective is to alleviate current and forecast traffic congestion by increasing the travel lanes to four lanes, with two in each direction. This means the cycleway will have to be relocated off-road. Various intersections and pedestrian crossings are also to be upgraded to signals due to the change.

This package of Detailed Design and Engineering will advance the project to the final IFC (Issue for Construction) level of design, which will involve preparation of a ‘For Construction’ drawings set and enable issuance of a Lump Sum pricing tender for construction of the Project.

The preliminary design has identified the preferred design option, which has been developed based on detailed site investigations undertaken between October 2023 and February 2024.

The overall WRUP upgrade is 4km in length, but the project has been staged as follows:

Stage 1 of the project includes a 2.9km upgrade of Wollombi Road between Abbotsford Street, Bellbird and West Avenue, and includes Early Works to build a new intersection at Bellbird North. Stage 1 is funded through a combination of funds from the NSW Accelerated Infrastructure Fund and development contributions.

An early works package (within the limits of Stage 1) on Wollombi Road between Lochinvar Street and O’Neil Street, which is approximately 500m in length has been detailed designed by others.

Stage 2 of the project includes a 1km upgrade of Wollombi Road between West Avenue and Vincent Street, Cessnock. This stage is currently not funded; however, grant funding is actively being pursued.

Whilst the preliminary design covers both stages 1 and 2 of the WRUP. The work required under this package is associated with Stage 1 only. As detailed design for the Early works is nearing completion, this remaining section of design for Stage 1 is to be developed to interface with, and in consideration of, the proposed intersection configuration for the Proposed new Bellbird North, Lochinvar Street, O’Neill Street, and Wangi Street intersections (refer to the BRS 50% Detailed Design – Early works noting that the extension of battery limits from Hoskings Place to Wangi Street was issued post this 50% submission and is currently a work in progress).
