The GMAT is comprised of practitioners from the following specialties:

  • gastroenterology
  • general surgery
  • obstetrics and gynecology
  • infectious diseases
  • internal medicine
  • maxillofacial surgery
  • occupational medicine
  • paediatric medicine
  • rehabilitation medicine
  • rheumatology

  • urology
  • vascular surgery

The PAT is a newly prescribed tribunal that will consist exclusively of psychiatrists and will assess psychological and psychiatric injuries. The PAT was prescribed to recognise psychiatry as a distinct specialty and will commence on 1 July 2024.

Selection and recruitment process for the MATs

A selection and recruitment process are underway noting the current term of GMAT appointments expire on 30 June 2024.

Applications for appointment to the MATs close on 11 March 2024. Further details can be found at worksafe.qld.gov.au.

The merit-based selection process aims to identify suitable nominees for recommendation for appointment to the Minister for State Development and Infrastructure, Minister for Industrial Relations, and Minister for Racing.

The Office of Industrial Relations is establishing a selection panel to assist with this process and seeks the Royal Australian College of Physicians’ nomination of a senior representative to take part in the selection panel for tribunal applicants.

Selection panel members will be asked to review candidate applications and participate in a meeting of the selection panel in the week of 25 March 2024. Interviews of applicants will not be necessary.

The time required for reviewing applications is estimated at approximately 4 hours with the meeting to review the applications to take approximately 2 hours. Selection panel members will be paid a flat fee of $1,500 for their time reviewing applications and participating in the selection meeting.
