The hospital campus has several buildings constructed over the period of 1940 to 2014. The campus is currently outdated and requires newer facilities to address the growing population and capability requirements.

In May 2018, Wonthaggi Hospital Stage One redevelopment was announced and construction of a $115 million expansion of facilities at Wonthaggi had commenced. In December 2022, a new

emergency department was completed, where this space included 18 new treatment points of care and 4 short stay cubicles to treat an additional 26,000 emergency patients every year.

In March 2023, the three new theatres, a procedure room and 32 inpatient beds were completed and are currently now in operation. To operate in line with the expectation of a sub-regional health service,

Bass Coach Health is keen to develop capabilities and services from Level 3 to Level 4 in maternity, surgery and anesthetics. In 2022, the Victorian Labor government publicly committed between $250 to $290 million to deliver Wonthaggi Hospital Stage Two that delivers up to 64 beds, a new birthing complex with three birthing suites and a new outpatient clinic with around 25 treatment spaces. Additionally, this investment aims to complete the medical imaging unit begun in the first stage of works, refurbish allied health treatment spaces, administration buildings and training areas, and deliver extra car parking for staff, patients and visitors.

The Victorian Health Building Authority is now required to progress the master planning and feasibility study phases for inclusion into a future Business Case submission for government consideration.
