Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI) from parties interested in relocating and repurposing the former Queenstown Arts Centre building (QAC), located on Stanley Street.
The former Queenstown Arts Centre building holds many fond memories for some members of the Queenstown Lakes community. The building’s location and surrounding area have been identified in the Queenstown town centre masterplan as the preferred location of a community heart, with a variety of new cultural facilities for the district’s communities (Project Manawa) and a new Council administration building.
Council officers have been tasked with finding a future use of the QAC building. On 17 March 2022 Council adopted the Statement of Proposal to remove the QAC from the Schedule of Assets as detailed in the QLDC Significance and Engagement Policy 2021. Public consultation was undertaken during April and May 2022. Council resolved to remove the QAC from the Schedule of Assets on 11 August 2022.
The building’s removal is subject (but not limited to) the following conditions which accommodate preferences about the future of the building expressed through the public consultation process:
- The building is to be relocated and reused not demolished.
- Preference will be given to retaining the building within the district.
