Tender Description
The light vehicle access road for the wye is an unsealed road in a moderate traffic area. When it rains the surface is highly unstable and light vehicles sink in the mud which poses an ongoing safety risk due to:
- Wet weather causing very slippery conditions – vehicles slide when driving on the wet surface and pedestrians accessing rolling stock are at high risk of slipping.
- After rain, this dries hard and any ruts caused by vehicles create an additional hazard to vehicles and pedestrians.
- Risk of becoming bogged.
- Corrugation caused by regular use - it is graded on a semi-regular basis but does not take long to become corrugated again meaning that cars have a tendency to drift when driving over it.
Due to the safety risk, this area is closed to traffic directly after rain until it is dried which affects standard rail operating processes.
The proposal is to remove 100mm of material and replace it with a road-base of compacted, recycled concrete. Advantages of this product include:
- Environmentally friendly option;
- A firm surface that is not affected by rain and requires little maintenance;
- Absorbent and becomes firmer after rain, providing a solid walking and driving surface in all weather conditions;
- There are no works currently planned for this road however Sustaining Capital are reviewing the roads in 7 Mile yard to look for upgrade opportunities in the future. If sealing this area is decided at a later date this product provides an effective road base that can be sealed directly over.
