874-2021-22 Technical Manager Meteorological (AWS) Data Acquisition Networks

⁠⁠⁠The Bureau of Meteorology’s services in weather forecasting, hazard warning and climate monitoring rely on data from a number of distributed observation networks that continuously monitor and report the state of terrestrial, upper air and marine environments.

The Observations Systems and Operations (OSO) Program establishes, operates, and maintains the Bureau’s national meteorological observations networks. This position will reside within the Operational Technology and Engineering (OTE) team. OTE is responsible for supplying all engineering and specialist technical services to OSO.

The occupant of this position is a member of the In-Situ Measurement (ISM) subsection of OSO/OTE and will lead the technical team to ensure the development and delivery of measurement equipment and systems to meet surface observations performance and functional requirements. The key measurement equipment is the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) which is a field deployed data acquisition and transmission system coupled with a set of meteorological sensors. The sensors include items such as barometers, thermocouples, humidity probes, wind speed and direction, other aviation, and specialist intelligent sensor suites. The AWS network consists of approximately 750 remotely sited AWS. The AWS are networked through a combination of 4G and Satellite communications.
