Background:

The College has been invited by Macquarie University to nominate a representative to an Expert Advisory Group (EAG) supporting a project on personal importation of medicines titled “Shedding light on Australia’s hidden pharmaceutical market”.

This project is funded via a Macquarie University Research Fellowship and is focused on understanding Australia’s online medicines marketplace, and the ethical, legal and social implications it poses. In particular, the project will focus on the phenomena of personal importation, which involves individuals importing medicines from overseas, often to save money. This is allowed under Australian legislation with some caveats but is poorly regulated.

The EAG will facilitate achievement of project goals, assist with maximising the impact of outcomes, and identify opportunities to expand the project into new directions via the establishment of collaborations and acquisition of research funding.

Term and commitment:

  • Next meeting date: TBC, likely in February 2022.
  • Location: Meetings will be held via videoconference
  • Term of appointment: 2 year term, with the project expected to be completed by June 2024.
  • The EAG will meet on a needs basis, which is currently anticipated to be once or twice a year however some activity may take occur between meetings.
  • Please note that this is a self-funded appointment
