Tender Description

AgriFutures Australia’s investments are driven by our  five-year   strategic R&D plan that addresses the needs of industries and stakeholders. Our aim is to increase knowledge that fosters sustainable, productive new and existing rural industries and further understanding of nationally significant rural issues through research and developing in government-industry partnership.

As carbon markets are rapidly being developed around the world, top 500 companies are quickly learning how they can participate in formal and voluntary carbon schemes, undertake abatement activities and sequester carbon through creating carbon sinks, or purchasing carbon credits.

Agricultural communities have an opportunity to be part of this conversation. However, despite the regular discussion pieces in the media, there is little practical information that provides the ‘101’ as to how a farmer might participate in carbon sequestration activities, or even understand the fundamentals of how the system operates.

The aim of this project is to provide a simple reference guide to help farmers understand carbon sequestration activities, be introduced to the potential obligations, risks and requirements to participate and potential options to sequester carbon on farm.

Project Deliverables:

This project will outline current and emerging carbon sequestration information available in Australia for rural industries, as well as outline opportunities for farmers to participate in carbon sequestration. This will be condensed into a farmer’s pocket guide. The pocket guide will broadly identify risks and rewards for potential sequestration options.

The intention is for the pocket guide to help primary producers understand the basics of carbon management to the point where they can evaluate whether to undertake carbon focused activities. The pocket guide is intended to provide practical carbon sequestration information for farmers. It is not intended as a comprehensive decision-making tool. The content should be an easy-to-read information guide that, where necessary, points to other useful sources.

The pocket guide should address, but is not limited to, the following questions and requirements:

  • What are the basic concepts of carbon sequestration and market opportunities?
  • How might farmers participate in carbon sequestration activities?
  • What are the options for increasing carbon in a typical farming system?
  • What obligations, risk and liabilities (e.g. what happens if there is drought or bushfire etc) of participation in carbon sequestration and abatement activities (i.e. baseline studies etc).
  • Outline the basic legal obligations for participation in carbon storage activities and where can advice be sought.
  • Develop the steps for producers if they want to look at feasibility options for their own farm.
The final deliverable will be developed using AgriFutures Australia’s National Rural Issues style guide and should be in MSWord format to be designed by AgriFutures Australia. The format and design will be negotiated with the successful tenderer.  No design costs for the summary should be built into the quotation.
