Expressions of Interest for ACCU Plus A and B soil carbon projects

⁠⁠⁠ Western Australian Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program

The State Government's $15 million Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program aims to realise agriculture's potential to sequester carbon in the landscape and contribute to the growth of the Western Australian carbon farming market. These on-ground projects will deliver environmental, social and economic co-benefits and contribute to the long-term sustainability of the farming industry.

Round 1 is now open.

Structure

The Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program (CF-LRP) has two streams:

1. ACCU Plus offers up-front funding for new Emissions Reduction Fund (ERF) carbon farming projects that deliver one or more priority co-benefits in return for an agreed number of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). 

• ACCU Plus A - ERF soil and vegetation projects
• ACCU Plus B - ERF soil projects located on a property with an average annual rainfall below 350 mm (May – October, 2000-2020). See ACCU Plus B - Eligible Areas map. 

2. Future Carbon provides grants to establish innovative carbon sequestration pilot projects, activities and trials to support the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices. Future Carbon will support projects with university or similar institutional support that have the potential to develop new or amended ERF carbon sequestration methods, and those that enhance the understanding of farming activities that sequester carbon. The sharing of project data and information gained from these projects will contribute to a more climate resilient farming industry.  

Successful projects in both streams will facilitate knowledge sharing and capacity building.  

Priority co-benefits

Projects funded through the CF-LRP will implement activities that also deliver additional, positive outcomes, referred to as ‘co-benefits’. These co-benefits can increase the perceived and actual value of carbon sequestration activities. The CF-LRP priority co-benefits are: 

• Biodiversity and conservation 
• Agricultural productivity 
• Salinity mitigation 
• Soil health 
• Aboriginal economic and cultural opportunities

The Priority Investment Co-benefits Standard outlines how the proponent should determine which co-benefits their project will deliver, and how these co-benefits will be measured, monitored and reported on at the agreed milestones. 

Eligibility

Projects funded by the CF-LRP must be new (i.e. not commenced) and additional (i.e. would not have occurred without CF-LRP financial support).

CF-LRP Co-benefits Information Portal

The Co-benefits Information Portal is an interactive GIS mapping tool developed to identify potential co-benefits. ​You should use the portal in conjunction with other information and on-ground evidence to identify and validate the project's co-benefits.  A Portal User Guide is provided. 

Eligible businesses and entities include:

• Commercial farm property owners
• Not-for-Profit entities undertaking a project under commercial arrangements with the owner/s of a farm property or properties; and
• Carbon farming developers undertaking a project under commercial arrangements with the owner/s of a farm property or properties.
