About Yarra
The City of Yarra is an inner metropolitan municipality which is home to a diverse community of over 100,000 people. It is located in Melbourne's inner-northern suburbs, about four kilometres north-east of the Melbourne CBD. The municipality is broken up into three geographic wards: Langridge Ward, Melba Ward and Nicholls Ward.
The City of Yarra is well known for being champions of social justice, leaders in climate action, custodians of the unique culture and heritage, and advocates for its vibrant creative industries. It is also a popular destination to live, work and visit. It has abundant natural beauty and heritage, sustainable transport options, retail and entertainment precincts, and exciting arts and cultural attractions.
The City of Yarra has a total capital and operating budget of $240 million, which is used to deliver a wide range of community services and maintain essential community infrastructure.
The Committee
The Audit and Risk Committee provides independent and objective assurance and assistance to the Yarra City Council and its Chief Executive Officer on Council’s risk management, control and compliance framework, and its external financial and performance accountability and responsibilities. In addition, the Committee provides advice to Council that will assist Council in fulfilling its corporate governance and oversight responsibilities.
The Committee comprises two Councillors and three independent members and ordinarily meets five to six times per year. There is a potential for special meetings to be called.
The role
A vacancy exists for an independent member of the Audit and Risk Committee of Yarra City Council. Independent members receive remuneration for their role.
The term for independent members is three years. Individual appointments may vary in length to achieve an orderly rotation of membership.
Selection Criteria
Candidates should:
- have senior business or financial management/reporting knowledge and experience, be tertiary qualified in Business, Commerce, Accounting or other related disciplines from either the private or public sectors
- be knowledgeable about the duties and responsibilities of the position as outlined in the Charter; especially in relation to Government operations, financial reporting and auditing requirements, risk management, and corporate governance in addition aware of the complexity of Council service delivery and infrastructure challenges would be desirable
- maintain a broad understanding of the legal requirements of the Local Government Act 1989 and the Local Government Act 2020.
- have the requisite industry, business, financial and leadership skills, possess strong interpersonal skills and well-developed communication skills
