⁠⁠⁠The Department of Health (DoH) are currently seeking one (1) College representative for the Biotoxin Related Illness Advisory Committee (The Committee), with the DoH determining the final membership

The DoH is seeking Physicians with expertise and experience in the following: General medicine, Infectious diseases, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Clinical Allergy, Clinical Immunology & Endocrinology. The Committee will comprise representatives from a broad range of allied health and specialist medical fields; as well as consumer representation.

Selection criteria - Applications should include a brief covering statement addressing criterion below:

  1. Reason for interest in representing the College on the DoH’s Biotoxin-related Illness Advisory Committee
  2. Please stipulate your specialism: General medicine, Infectious diseases, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Clinical Allergy, Immunology or Endocrinology
  3. Briefly detail your expert interest and understanding of Biotoxin-related Illness
  4. Do you have any previous or current professional or personal connections that may give cause for perceived conflict of interest with the Department of Health?

Background:

In October 2018, the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health, Aged Care and Sport issued its Inquiry Report into Biotoxin-related Illnesses. The Committee reviewed the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of biotoxin-related illnesses and recommended that the Commonwealth Department of Health:

  • conduct a review into the treatment of patients presenting with complex illnesses that are difficult to diagnose such as biotoxin-related illnesses and those with CIRS-like conditions;
  • develop clinical guidelines for GPs for the diagnosis, treatment and management of CIRS-­like conditions, in consultation with patient groups, medical practitioners, and health bodies.

The Committee will consider the outcomes of the aforementioned review as well as guide the development of the clinical guidance to assist GPs and health professionals in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of these complex illnesses.

Term and commitment:

  • The College has been invited to appoint one (1) representative to be considered for the Biotoxin-related Illness Advisory Committee, with the Department determining the final membership
  • The Committee is expected to meet once every two months via teleconference, or as determined by the chairperson, with the first meeting anticipated to take place in June 2021 (date to be advised).
  • The term of the appointment is for 1 year, until June 2022.
  • Representatives will be expected to provide the College with a report or summary of each meeting discussion and outcomes as agreed with the Policy and Advocacy department.
  • Representatives are to adhere to the College’s Code of Conduct.
  • Members of the committee will be remunerated according to Commonwealth Government guidelines
