Tender Description

⁠⁠⁠Spring radiation frosts and heat shock events are major constraints to grain production in Australia. Despite the widespread impact of these constraints there is limited knowledge of the yield losses caused by frost and heat events of variable severity and duration, at different stages of development, in different crop types and in field conditions with variable soil moisture profiles in spring.

There is a need to develop improved knowledge of the yield losses associated with frost and heat events – primarily in wheat, barley, and canola, and secondarily in chickpeas, and lentils – and to deliver the benefits of that information to growers and advisors sustainably, and at scale. A key pathway to impact for this knowledge is through the development and commercialisation of digital farming/decision aid and risk management products in the Australian market.

GRDC seeks Responses from parties interested in participating in a potential multi-stage process in relation to the PROC-9176375: Prediction tools to quantify yield loss from frost and heat in wheat, barley, canola, chickpeas, and lentils. Specifically, GRDC seeks Responses that will accomplish the following objectives:

(a) Develop scale-able approaches to quantifying the severity, timing and duration of spring frost and heat events at the sub-paddock scale across the Australian grain belt;

(b) Develop prediction tools capable of quantifying yield loss associated with frost and heat events in wheat, barley, canola, chickpeas, and lentils at different stages of development and at the sub-paddock scale across the Australian grain belt; and

(c) Based on objectives (a) and (b), develop and commercialise scale-able digital farming products capable of improving grower profit from improved decision making on frost and heat risk management in wheat, barley, canola, chickpeas and lentils at sowing time, in-crop and, where applicable, through other applications in farm business decision making and other channels in the grains industry.

Applicants should note the following principles for the EOI:

  • GRDC will consider applications that focus only on wheat, barley, and canola, and/or propose addressing chickpeas and lentils in a separate and/or subsequent phase of work
  • Applications may be led by commercial businesses or research organisations
  • Applications must have at least one commercial partner involved to ensure a path to market
  • Commercial partners and/or research organisations may be listed in more than one application
  • International commercial partners and/or international research organisations may apply
  • GRDC is focussed on supporting the development of solutions that benefit Australian grain growers but is open to discussing development and commercialisation opportunities that match the interests of international applicants
  • GRDC will be open to exploring exclusive arrangements depending on the level of cash, in-kind, and background IP contributed by applicants as well as their market presence in Australia.
