Tender Description

The Immigration Museum is looking for a Victorian based artist to create a unique artwork to respond to an upcoming pop-up exhibition featuring highlight objects from the museum’s Mirka Mora collection. The opening of the pop-up exhibition will coincide with the 70th anniversary of Mirka Mora’s arrival in Australia.

The commissioned artwork and proposed concepts should be responsive to the style and practice of Mirka Mora and reflective of her creative practice, immigration journey and identity.

The expression of interest (EOI) will be open from Monday 3 May 2021 until 11.59pm on Friday 14 May 2021. For further information on the application and eligibility please see the EOI details below.

Themes
The below themes have been identified to assist artists to develop their artwork proposals, these are:

  • Identity and Belonging: Mirka was a migrant, painter, textile artist, miniaturist and style maker.
  • Social History: people, diverse community and history.
  • Cultural Landscape: the city, and it’s urban landscape.

Key Exhibition Items
The EOI may choose to respond to any or all of the below key exhibition items:

  • Unfinished Embroidered Artwork of Mirka Mora’s signature angel motif
  • Mirka Mora’s first English book 'A Rage to Live',
  • Timber art case containing paints used for her practice
  • 1960s Sewing Scissors with bird design
  • An assortment of wooden and ceramic dolls

Submission Requirements and Deliverables
The EOI must contain a proposal for each of the following:

  • 1 x Wall Mural Social Activation Concept
  • 1 x Program activity concept for Mirka Magic Public Program
  • An artist statement that describes artist’s overall practice (up to 250 words)
  • A resume (no more than two A4 pages)
  • A proposal including project statement that outlines the proposed artwork and the artist’s proposed approach to artwork production (up to 250 words)
  • A proposed budget breakdown
  • Up to six images of mock-up designs with captions

Budget for artwork

  • $2,000 Project budget for development of social activation wall mural, and design assets
  • $500 for Programs budget development of public program element
  • $1,500 fee

Mandatories

  • Usage of Immigration Museum and Museums Victoria logotypes provided
  • Agreement to all of Museums Victoria’s EOI terms and conditions
  • The winning artist will be required to enter into an agreement with Museums Victoria for the delivery of the artwork.

Selection Process
A selection panel, comprising of Museums Victoria representatives, will create a shortlist of artists. The selection of the winning artist is at the complete discretion of Museums Victoria.

By submitting an Expression of Interest, the Artist agrees to the following timeline.

  • 3 May 2021 EOIs Open

  • 20 May 2021 Commission Outcome Announced
  • 20 May – 1 June 2021 Preparation and Development
  • 2 June 2021 Install
  • 4 June 2021 Exhibition Opens
