Hinchinbrook Shire Council (Council) is seeking quotations from suitably qualified service providers (Service Provider) to provide collection services of mattresses received at the Warrens Hill Landfill & Resource Recovery Centre (WHLRRC) and Halifax Waste Transfer Station.
Mattresses are a problem waste as, when landfilled, they are difficult to compact and hence take up vital airspace within the landfill cell. Also, mattresses can contain valuable resources such as steel and, in line with council's commitment to maximise on resource recovery, council requires these materials to be recovered and recycles recycled.
Currently there are around a total of 373 mattresses stored within the sites (most located within the WHLRRC). Note that, due to the tropical weather experienced by the region, existing stockpiles of mattresses have been impacted by recent wet weather and may experience mould as they are stored exposed to the surrounded elements. Council still require these stockpiles to be processed.
