Background:

The Medical Council of NSW (the Council) is a statutory authority established under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (NSW).  The Council’s main responsibility is to protect the public by regulating the profession. This is achieved by working in partnership with Health Care Complaints Commission to manage complaints about the health, performance and conduct of registered practitioners in NSW.

The current term of Council members is due to expire in June 2021. The Council has contacted the College seeking ONE nomination of a member to be considered for appointment. Final approval of Council membership is granted by the NSW Minister of Health.

As the College has been asked to provide one nomination to the NSW Minister of Health we will be undertaking a selection process if we receive more than one application. Note that while the attached Information for Nominating Bodies Package outlines that nominees are not required to provide written responses to the NSW Minister of Health to the selection criteria, members are asked to provide this as part of their application to the College to assist in the College selection process.

As outlined in the Information for Nominating Bodies Package the NSW Minister of Health will undertake a separate nomination process to appointment to the Council membership, once all nominations have been received from nominating organisations.

Term and commitment:

  • Please note that any nominee who is successfully appointed to the Council will do so in an individual capacity and not as a formal representative of the College
  • The upcoming Council term is due to commence from July 2021
  • The Council membership term is for a period of three (3) years
  • Appointed Council members are expected to attend monthly Council meeting and may include more frequent committee meetings, depending on the complaint volume of the Council
  • On occasion, members may attend community meeting or events in a representative capacity
