In order to address the service gap for young people with severe mental illness requiring complex psychosocial support, Brisbane South PHN gained approval from Department of Health to focus a proportion of National Psychosocial Support Measure (NPSM) funding, towards embed psychosocial supports for children and young people in the Logan-Beaudesert area. This response will be linked to clinical and non-clinical services and will deliver an integrated approach to meeting young people's needs.
Brisbane South PHN is working closely with Metro South Addiction and Mental Health Services and other key stakeholders to address the complex mental health needs of children and young people, including high demand of services that have significant waitlists. By focusing a proportion of the NPSM funding towards support for children and young people, there is an opportunity to assess the positive impact this response has on access and outcomes for young people, and positive impacts the systemic stressors, which will inform future planning at the service and system levels.
Brisbane South PHN will work with the selected service delivery partner/s and other key stakeholders, to develop a response that focuses on an early intervention capacity building approach to support stability across fundamental areas of a young person's life including building and improving family connections, social skills and friendship; education and employment goals; building life skills; managing drug and alcohol issues and building capability to engage across multiple clinical and non-clinical agencies. The response will include embedding a sustainable approach to long-term support.
