Tender Description

This project aims to use seedbank diversity and subfossil remains of invertebrate and/or other organisms found in wetland sediments, to establish the historical nature of the wetlands, including the degree of permanency and likely flora and/or fauna present. The project will target recent history (within the last 250-300 years).

Data collection will involve shallow sediment sampling (likely 20-50 cm below surface) from a range of wetland sites across the floodplain. Analysis of subfossil remains is likely to include chironomid (midge) assemblages, as these have proven useful indicator taxa for permanent and temporary wetlands. By collecting paired samples for seedbank and subfossil analyses and sharing corresponding Pb210 (or similar) age dating data, we aim to build a clearer picture of the terrestrial/aquatic state shifts over time that determine current ecological condition
