On August 05, 2018, the Federal Government announced $11.4 million over four years for additional mental health initiatives to support farmers and communities to deal with the uncertainty, stress and anxiety of drought conditions. On 26 October 2018, the Federal Government announced further investment of $15.5 million over two years from 2018-19. This funding will provide increased support for mental health and suicide prevention measures, including an Empowering our Communities initiative to relevant PHNs to fund community-led mental health, social and emotional wellbeing and suicide prevention initiatives.
It is recognised that the impacts of drought not only affect farmers, but also the broader community. People who live or work in areas impacted by drought are eligible for services and activities provided under these arrangements. Community-led wellbeing initiatives should generally be group-focussed, promote individual and/or community resilience and wellbeing and reduce stigma associated with mental illness and accessing mental health services.
