Tender Description

Purpose: This project is seeking to research and implement a bridge assessment framework that will extend beyond the current design based, deterministic framework and will set out the requirements and steps to consider reliability/safety principles.

Reliability based, probabalistic assessment is prevalent in many other high risk industries such as nuclear power stations and the aerospace industry and allowance of reliability considerations have been adopted in other countries’ bridge design standards for a number of years.

The outputs of the project will be a determination of the safety of the bridge inventory through historic design codes safety calibration and the determination of the safety of the current access levels given in the context of operational and asset management as opposed to design. This will enable MAs to understand the current levels of safety and begin the process to practically scale the allowable access to acceptable levels. This will be disseminated through a research report and a webinar. Ultimately this project seeks to extend service provided by bridge infrastructure to accommodate greater heavy vehicle productivity.
