Tender Description

The Ministry of Transport, NZ Transport Agency, Bus and Coach Association, Auckland Transport, Greater Wellington Regional Council, and Canterbury Regional Council are collaborating on the commissioning and execution of a study to measure the in-service axle loads of buses.

To do so will likely require the installation and monitoring of on-board weight sensors, and the collection of live weight data from the sensors. Most buses use air suspension, which means air pressure transducers are the most obvious type of sensor to capture weight data.

We expect this project will involve the following key steps:
1) Contact the nominated bus and coach operators to arrange for vehicles to be made available.
2) Install on-board weight sensors if they are not already present (e.g. air pressure transducers).
3) Install and/or use an existing telematics system that is configured to receive or log and transfer weight data from the sensors.
4) Calibrate existing or newly installed sensors to ensure they provide accurate weight data.
5) Provide a mechanism to make the data accessible or provide data storage for access at a later date.

The methodology above is provided for guidance. Proposals using alternative methodologies to monitor in-service axle loads of buses will be considered.

Further information on the project is available in the tender documents.
