Tender Description

Opal mining is undertaken on a smaller scale than traditional mining activities, with a standard mineral claim being around 50m x 50m and operated by an individual. The two opal fields in New South Wales (NSW) are located in the regions of Lightning Ridge and White Cliffs. Lightning Ridge is the largest opal field containing approximately 93% of the state’s mineral claims.

When undertaking opal mining operations, it is common practice for opal miners to stockpile opal mining overburden (mullock) in communal locations colloquially known as ‘communal mullock stockpiles’. The Agency has identified 42 communal mullock stockpiles within Lightning Ridge mineral claims district and 4 communal mullock stockpiles with the White Cliffs mineral claims district.

Further information on the 42 and 4 identified communal mullock stockpiles, and the appropriate standard of rehabilitation, is required by the Agency.
