Over 190,000 tonnes of litter was collected from the streets of New Zealand by approximately 86,000 Keep New Zealand Beautiful volunteers in 2015 alone. In May 2016, over six tonnes of litter was picked up from local Auckland waterways in just one day.
Keep New Zealand Beautiful will launch a National Litter Audit (NLA) which will compile data through the physical inspection and visual counting of litter in a number of specific, fixed sites. The information collected will provide empirical data on the quantities, types, locations, and brands of litter deposited across the country. The methodology and monitoring plan for the NLA will be developed by KNZB in consultation with StatsNZ and the Ministry. The NLA will help to address the litter problem by giving baseline data on litter in land across New Zealand.
The NLA audit will be focused on land based litter and the methodology will include similarities to the Beach Litter methodology currently in development by MfE, DOC and StatsNZ. This will allow for comparability and standardised monitoring across domains. Data collected through this audit will be entered into a database administered by Keep New Zealand Beautiful and will be freely available to governmental agencies to aid environmental reporting required under the Environmental Reporting Act 2015. Summary data will be available for public consumption. In conjunction with this methodology, a monitoring plan will be developed by an independent consultant.
Typically, there are four approaches to surveying land litter: small litter counts, large litter counts, visual ratings and full scale surveys, the latter encompasses the former three. Keep New Zealand Beautiful will be employing a Full Scale Survey. The research will consist of one comprehensive litter survey methodology and an accompanying monitoring plan that will detail the stratified sampling to capture key characteristics of land-based litter across different environment types.
Full Scale Surveys provide the most reliable measurement. The litter on site is measured and provides a range of information including:

* Type
* Volume;
* Mass;
* Ground coverage of litter; and
* Visual rating.
