The Western Treatment Plant (WTP) is at capacity and needs to be augmented to ensure that Melbourne Water continues to meet its obligations with respect to
* Managing the growth in forecasted influent flows and loads at WTP
* Complying with Melbourne Waters Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPAV) licence, in particular the effluent ammonia licence limit and the target for discharge of total nitrogen load for emissions into Port Phillip Bay
* Supplying recycled water to its customers.
The WTP Treatment Capacity Increase project represents the second stage in a three stage programme of works to augment capacity at the WTP. It involves the delivery of a new 140 ML/d nitrogen removal plant at the WTP, fed from Pond 1 at 55E lagoon.
