Refurbishment of Anglo-Australian Telescope Dome Bogies
Tender ID: 284091
Tender Details
Tender Description
The Australian Astronomical Observatory (AAO), located 30km from Coonabarabran in NSW, owns and operates the Anglo Australian Telescope (AAT).
The AAT’s 570 tonne dome is supported by 32 dome bogies that allow it to rotate around the azimuth dome rail. The bogies suffered major bearing failure in 1982 and were all removed and refurbished. After nearly 35 years of continual service it is evident that some of the bearings are now starting to show signs of wear.
A vibration analysis was carried out on all the bogies which identified significant vibration on several bogies. The bogie identified as requiring immediate attention, bogie 9, was removed, dismantled and inspected for wear and damage. The report concluded that the springs had lost some of their elasticity, bushes were worn and bearings all needed to be replaced. As the dome is a critical component of the observatory, it is proposed that all the bogies are refurbished with new bearings, bushes and the suspension springs re-tensioned.
Accordingly, the Department invites suitably qualified consultants/contractors to submit a tender for the refurbishment of all 32 bogies plus the spare bogie that is currently in a dismantled state.
