Tender Description

The Main Wharves, located at the port of Cairns (Cairns Seaport) extend along the western side of the Trinity Inlet and form the eastern boundary to the Cairns CBD. The Main Wharves are important infrastructure for the city of Cairns.

The Main Wharves are numbered Wharf No.1 to Wharf No.6, from north to south and are approximately 600m in total length. Wharves 1-5 are constructed using reinforced concrete. Wharf 6 is a timber structure with a concrete deck.

Construction commenced on what is presently Wharf No.3 in approximately 1910. Wharves 1-5 were built over the period of approximately 1910-1925. The wharves are heritage listed.

Given the age of the Main Wharves and the marine environment, it follows that components of the wharves have been subject to various extents of deterioration and numerous repairs have been implemented over the years.

Of particular relevance to this contract is a more recent approach of low cost life extension, or “holding” repairs applied specifically to areas where the concrete has spalled, typically exposing reinforcement. In 2008/2009 a program of spall repairs was undertaken. This has proven to be a successful low cost approach to the immediate treatment of exposed reinforcement. The intention of this contract is to repeat this treatment to expanding or new spalls. Evidence of these works is visible under the wharves and is discussed below.
