The University of Sydney is undertaking a pilot activity to evaluate people counting and occupancy sensing technologies for teaching spaces, seeking suppliers able to provide accurate, privacy-compliant occupancy data as part of the Unified Hybrid Campus Management System.

About

The University of Sydney manages a large and diverse portfolio of teaching spaces across the Camperdown/Darlington campus. Student enrolments have grown while the teaching space portfolio has not kept pace, and teaching practices have evolved toward more active, collaborative, and flexible learning environments.

The University currently relies on timetable, booking and enrolment data for teaching space management. This data describes planned use, not actual attendance or occupancy, which includes non-teaching activities such as events and exams. As a result, decisions on timetabling, room allocation, refurbishment, and asset planning are currently based on assumptions rather than measured use.

Costly condition audits and daily readiness checks capture wear and tear on space assets. Correlating this degradation data with evidence-based occupancy data can improve maintenance forecasting, planning, and asset lifecycle decision-making.

Purpose

Accurate real-time, or near real-time, occupancy data is needed to support both capital planning and maintenance of teaching spaces, moving decision-making away from assumptions and toward measured, evidence-based use.

Scope

The scope includes:

• Evaluation of people counting and occupancy sensing technologies for teaching spaces as part of a pilot activity
• Provision of accurate, privacy-compliant occupancy data for teaching spaces
