Tender Description

Overview

The Department of Education (NSW) is seeking quotes for the supply of the official word lists for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 NSW Premier's Spelling Bee.

About

The NSW Premier's Spelling Bee was introduced in 2004 and is a fun and educational way to engage primary school students in literacy and spelling. The program includes activities to encourage students to improve their vocabulary and spelling, promoting literacy skills in combination with the NSW English K-10 Syllabus.

In 2025, approximately 200,000 students from 1,006 public schools across NSW participated in the competition. The State Finals involved 32 junior primary and 32 senior primary students. Participation data for the 2026 Spelling Bee will be available in September 2026.

For the 2026 Spelling Bee:

  • Enrolments opened on 2 March 2026
  • Regional finals will be held from 3 August to 14 August 2026
  • The state final will be held on 6 November 2026

Dates for the 2027 and future spelling bees are to be confirmed.

Objectives

The objective of this RFQ is to identify an organisation capable of providing the official wordlists for the 2027, 2028 and 2029 NSW Premier's Spelling Bee.

Scope

The scope includes:

  • Provision of wordlists for the NSW Premier's Spelling Bee each year, supplied electronically in Excel format for both the Junior and Senior spelling bees
  • Supply of 3 separate wordlists annually: seen wordlists (Junior and Senior), unseen wordlists for regional finals (Junior and Senior), and unseen wordlists for state finals (Junior and Senior)
  • Ensuring a minimum 10% difference in each year's wordlists compared to the wordlist supplied for the previous year

Contract Terms and Conditions

  • The proposed contract will be based on the Department of Education standard short form contract
  • The contract will be a 1 + 1 + 1 contract based upon performance, with the department holding the right to renew the contract year to year
