Bendigo Livestock Exchange Roof Project - Stage 1

The City of Greater Bendigo is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced contractor to design and construct Stage 1 of the roofing project at the Bendigo Livestock Exchange, located at Huntly, Victoria.

About

The City of Greater Bendigo owns and operates the Bendigo Livestock Exchange. The exchange is one of regional Victoria's four major saleyards and is one of the most significant sheep and lamb trading facilities in the state, processing over one million sheep and lambs annually. The Bendigo Livestock Exchange is the last of the four major regional Victorian saleyards to operate without a permanent roof.

Stage 1 of the roofing project has received joint funding from the City of Greater Bendigo and the Victorian Government as part of the 2026/27 State Budget. Stages 2 and 3, which would cover the remainder of the sheep pens, remain subject to future funding applications and government approvals.

SCE Australia has been engaged by the City of Greater Bendigo to prepare the Technical Performance Specification supporting the procurement of a contractor for this project.

Purpose

The absence of a permanent roof at the Bendigo Livestock Exchange has driven years of industry and community advocacy for improved animal welfare, operational efficiency, and personnel safety at the facility.

Scope

The scope includes:

• Design and construction of the Stage 1 roof and associated infrastructure over the sheep and lamb delivery pens
• Roofing of the delivery pens, which represent approximately one-third of the total sheep pens and have a combined area of approximately 12,750 m²
• Design and construction of Stage 1 works to integrate seamlessly with future Stage 2 and Stage 3 works, in accordance with the masterplan concept

Contractor Requirements

• Suitably qualified and experienced in the design and construction of roofing and associated infrastructure

Location

The Bendigo Livestock Exchange is located at Wallenjoe Road, Huntly, Victoria 3551, approximately 15 km north of the Bendigo CBD, and is accessed via Wallenjoe Road. The livestock exchange comprises two saleyards: the sheep yards, which are in active operation, and the cattle saleyard, which is no longer in operation.
