Project goals

This project is part of the Restoring the Upper Murrumbidgee River (RUMR) broader project. It aims to reduce the increasing threat of invasive weeds in all reaches of the RUMR project area. It will build on past works, with ambitious targets for substantial improvement of riparian condition and habitat in the upper reaches of the Murrumbidgee River.

The work locations have been split into four Sub Projects between Tantangara Dam and Burrunjuck Dam.

  • Yaouk. (Yaouk to Numeralla River)
  • Cooma.(Numeralla River to Bredbo)
  • Monaro.(Bredbo to Angle Crossing)

This project includes the following priority on ground works;

  • 31km of Box elder tree primary weed treatment
  • 3 x priority public sites managed for priority weed trees
  • 45-65km priority weed tree initial control
  • 6-10km priority weed tree initial control with removal
  • 10km priority weed tree initial control difficult access
  • 80-101km priority weed tree follow-up control

Scope

This project aims to control woody weed species that significantly impact river health, including native fish habitat, riparian vegetation, and in‑stream ecological condition. Project Area Contractors (or approved subcontractors) will undertake woody weed control works along targeted reaches of the Upper Murrumbidgee River. The exact extent and locations of works will be confirmed progressively as landholder consents are secured. Updated site maps will be issued by the Project Coordinator. Required Works (Scope of Services) Contractors will be required to deliver any of the following activities:

  • Woody Weed Treatment
  • Willow Removal and Handling
  • Blackberry Control

The project builds on previous works and focuses on:

  • Improving riparian condition and habitat in upper river reaches.
  • Reducing the spread and impact of invasive woody weeds in lower reaches of the RUMR project area.
  • Achieving measurable ecological improvement through targeted weed control and removal.
