About the City of Fremantle

The City of Fremantle is a local government authority situated approximately 20 kilometres south of the Perth CBD, encompassing the suburbs of Beaconsfield, Fremantle, Hilton, North Fremantle, O'Connor, Samson, South Fremantle and White Gum Valley across a land area of 19 square kilometres.

Originally established as the Town of Fremantle Council in 1871, the City achieved its current status in 1929 and today employs more than 400 people serving a residential population of approximately 30,000.

The City of Fremantle has a long-standing commitment to responsible social, economic and environmental stewardship. In 2009, Fremantle became Western Australia's first carbon neutral city, and in September 2014 became one of only two councils in Australia to achieve national One Planet certification for sustainability. The City also has a strong focus on arts and culture, operating the iconic Fremantle Arts Centre and delivering world-renowned events including the Fremantle Festival, Australia's oldest festival.
