The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) is seeking information from industry to inform the future development, specification, and procurement of Structural Firefighting Protective Clothing (PPC).
Project goals
There is an intention to review industry feedback and information to develop a fit for purpose protective garment set for our volunteers. A series of scenarios will be built to establish which fabrics and combinations are aligned to the needs of the organisation.
This work will identify emerging technologies, materials, and innovations in structural firefighting garments, with a focus on advancements in thermal protection, moisture management, and physiological performance. It will gather insights into lightweight garment design and strategies for reducing metabolic heat burden, informing the development of a fit‑for‑purpose, performance‑based specification aligned with operational requirements. The outcomes will also support a future open‑market tender process conducted in accordance with NSW Government procurement principles.
Scope
NSW RFS is seeking detailed information relating to structural firefighting garments, including but not limited to:
- Jackets and trousers (outer shell, moisture barrier, thermal liner systems).
- Integrated or modular garment systems and innovation.
- Advanced material technologies and composites.
- Physiological monitoring or smart integration (if applicable)
- Garment tracking and asset management theory.
- Decontamination processes, lifecycles and programs including recommended cleaning methods.
