Public Art EOI - Burwood Park Pavilion & Amenities
Tender ID: 607194
Tender Details
Tender Description
Burwood Council is inviting Expressions of Interest from First Nations identifying artists to deliver a public art mural on the Burwood Park Pavilion, celebrating Wangal Country through the stories, history, nature and culture of the Wangal People.
As Sydney’s Cultural Playground, Burwood is fast emerging as a leading destination for arts and culture. The Burwood Park Pavilion and Amenities public art project will provide artists an opportunity to exhibit their work within a much loved historical park situated in the heart of Burwood.
Curatorial Themes
Recognition of Aboriginal culture and history is embedded within the three curatorial themes established in Council's Creative Burwood Strategy to guide public art projects in the Burwood LGA. These include:
- Past - Exploration of the history and ongoing culture of the Traditional Custodians of the Land, the Wangal Peoples
- Present - Bringing to the forefront the recognition of the living culture and stories of the Wangal Peoples
- Future - Acknowledging the ongoing presence and importance of Aboriginal culture.
In responding to these themes, artists are encouraged to consider approaches that are adaptable to the form of the Pavilion setting and amenity block, which can be effectively suitable for vinyl reproduction and large-format application. Works that engage with symbolism, narrative abstraction, or pattern-based visual languages may be particularly suited to this context.
Proposals will also be required to consider the site's function as an active public space, ensuring the artwork is enduring, and appropriate to a multi-use community gathering environment.
Scope:
The selected artist/s will be responsible for the design, delivery and installation of the mural at the nominated site, including:
- Design and installation of the mural on the Pavilion
- Installation of anti-graffiti coating following completion of the mural
- Liaising with Council staff to ensure install dates align with Pavilion booking vacancies.
The selected artist/s will be responsible for providing the digital file of the artwork to be installed on the Burwood Park amenity block. Council's graphic design team will be able to assist with design specs where needed.
Council will be responsible for the preparation, print and installation of the artwork onto the amenity block.
Location
Burwood Park is bound by Park Road, Park Avenue, Burwood Road and Comer Street. The Park is located in the heart of Burwood with a short walk to the shops and Westfield Burwood. Burwood Park Pavilion is located within Burwood Park, adjoining Burwood Park Community Centre.
The selected artist will deliver a new public art mural that wraps around the lower stage of the Burwood Park Pavilion. The artwork design will also be used to install a vinyl wrap on the newly established amenity block.
