Burdekin Shire Council is seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified and experienced individuals to serve in the role of Independent Chairperson on the Audit and Risk Committee.
The opportunity: The Audit and Risk Committee is a source of independent advice and objective insights and assurance to Burdekin Shire Council and the CEO regarding finance, governance, risk management and audit related matters. The Independent Chairperson is responsible for ensuring the Audit and Risk Committee meetings are run smoothly and that the views of all members and attendees are heard, and that the agenda and meeting papers properly reflect proceedings. While the role requires a commitment to chair six (6) scheduled meetings per year, plus any ad hoc sessions, the focus is on high-level strategic contribution, rather than operational auditing. The appointment is for a four-year term with the maximum number of consecutive terms being two (2) terms.
About You: You are an ethically-minded professional with a strong understanding of public sector organisations. You are a strategic thinker and have not been a Councillor or staff member of Burdekin Shire Council within the past eight (8) years. While you are not required to reside in the Burdekin Shire Local Government Area, you bring recognised qualifications in Accounting, Finance, Business, or Risk Management, along with substantial experience in business or organisational leadership. You are an effective communicator who can foster strong working relationships between the Audit and Risk Committee, Council, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), senior management, and both internal and external auditors. You must be willing and able to subscribe to the Burdekin Shire Council’s Code of Conduct, be of good character with no criminal convictions.
Remuneration and Further Information: The current remuneration level for the Independent Chairperson is $1792.18 (excluding GST) per meeting. The committee generally meets six (6) times each year. A copy of the current Audit and Risk Committee Charter is attached to this EOI. Further details about the remuneration rate can be found in the Charter. Applicants must either hold a current ABN or be willing to apply for one. Successful candidates will be required to submit an invoice for each committee meeting attendance.
