Vessel Availability for Live Export Growth

Australia’s livestock export industry is entering a period of renewed growth, supported by strong international demand and industry commitment to high welfare and biosecurity standards. However, ensuring reliable access to suitable livestock vessels can be a challenge. Competition for the global fleet of livestock vessels, combined with domestic regulatory and cost pressures, is influencing operator decisions and affecting the availability of shipping capacity for Australian trade.

An opportunity exists to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the regulatory, economic, operational and international factors shaping vessel availability. The project will analyse the drivers behind vessel operator decision‑making, benchmark incentives and settings in competitor export countries, and identify strategies to attract and retain vessels servicing Australian routes. Through engagement with exporters, vessel operators, regulators and industry bodies, the consultant will develop targeted, evidence‑based recommendations to improve shipping capacity, strengthen supply chain resilience and support long‑term industry growth.
