Expression of Inetrest - Historic Railway Carriage For Purchase

Hilltops Council invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) for the purchase and removal of a historic NSW railway carriage currently located at the railway siding, Anderson Park, Young, NSW, 2594.

About the Carriage:

• Designation: Carriage “2707”

• Type: Semi-saloon sitting car

• Built: 1926 by Meadowbank Manufacturing, NSW

• Heritage Status: Historic railway carriage placed at Anderson Park, Young since 1993

History:

This carriage has a rich history as part of NSW's railway heritage:

• Converted to full-corridor configuration in 1950.

• Transported to Young in 1993 from the Hunter region.

• Located adjacent to Young railway station in Anderson Park.

• Original home of the Young Cherry Festival Committee.

Current Status:

Following an update presented to Hilltops Council in October 2025, Council has decided to release an Expression of Interest for the purchase and removal of the carriage. The carriage includes a complete train wheelset and bogie on the undercarriage. It is currently located next to the historic Young railway station in a railway siding, which is easily accessible by crane for removal.

Please note: the carriage has not been used since 2019 and requires restoration.

• Heritage organisations and preservation societies.

• Railway museums and historical societies.

• Community groups interested in transport heritage.

• Commercial ventures (café, restaurant, accommodation).

• Private collectors with restoration capabilities.

• Home conversion projects.

Terms and Conditions:

• Purchaser is responsible for all removal and relocation costs – the railway carriage includes a complete wheelset and bogie beneath the structure. The current location provides easy crane access for removal

• Removal is to be completed within three months of purchase

• No cost to Council for removal

• All transport permits must be obtained by the purchaser

• Arrangements must be negotiated with the Hilltops Council
