South Australia's Green Iron and Steel Strategy seeks to facilitate transition of the Whyalla steelworks to green steel production and enable green iron exports via a new Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) facility, using the region’s high-quality magnetite reserves in the Upper Spencer Gulf.

There are a range of technologies for DRI facilities that utilise both natural gas and hydrogen. The specific DRI technology for a transformed Whyalla Steelworks is not yet chosen and will be resolved through the current process to find a new owner. It is however likely that there will be an increased demand for natural gas for a transformed Whyalla Steelworks.

The purpose of this Request for Information is to support engagement with both the Administrator of the Steelworks and prospective purchasers of the Steelworks on options for the supply and transport of natural gas to the Whyalla Steelworks.

There is an opportunity for respondents to the RFI to be given priority as a preferred supplier and/or natural gas solution provider to a new owner of the Steelworks.
