Gambling Harm Support SA (GHSSA) within the Department of Human Services (DHS) is responsible for administering the Gamblers Rehabilitation Fund (GRF) to deliver programs intended to minimise the harm caused by gambling.
The Gambling Harm Investment Plan 2021-2026 describes clear goals for future investment under the GRF, prioritises strategic areas of focus, and identifies evidence-based, practice informed opportunities to minimise gambling harm. Six key projects are committed to by DHS under the Investment Plan, including establishing a Strategic Research Agenda that helps grow the evidence base for what works to prevent and minimise gambling harm in South Australia.
The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) initiative aims to:
- Build the evidence for what works to prevent and minimse gambling harm in SA
- Foster growth of the gambling research community in SA
- Allow for testing of novel ideas in prevention and harm minimisation, and
- Usefully inform policy development, regulatory action and practice.
The SRA describes five key areas of research interestunder the Investment Plan, including:
- South Australians' awareness of risky gambling behaviours leads to harm and strategies to intervene
- Protective factors that prevent and minimise the risk of harm
- Overcoming barriers to help-seeking and maintaining positive change
- Enhancing resources and support for people impacted by others' risky gambling, and
- Preventing and minimising harm from gambling products, related technologies and contexts.
In 2025, funding will be made available for research projects aligned to one or more of these areas, with the identified priority area being "preventing and minimising harm from gambling products, related technologies and contexts.
