Gungas Road, located in the Nimbin region of northern New South Wales, services a rural catchment including residential properties, essential water infrastructure, and access to Nightcap National Park. This remote and flood-prone corridor has sustained recurring damage during multiple storm events, with two major crossings of Mulgum Creek washed out during the 2022 flood.

Temporary causeways were constructed to restore access, but these are subject to frequent overtopping and ongoing maintenance burdens. The permanent reconstruction of the Gungas Road corridor includes replacement of the two creek crossings and restoration of adjacent flood-damaged pavement over approximately 900 m.

To inform the procurement approach and maximise value for money outcomes, Council is undertaking market sounding to gauge industry capacity, interest, innovation potential, and any anticipated challenges in delivering a resilient, constructible and low-maintenance solution for this critical local road.
