Tender Description

Overview

The Tram Grade Separation Projects comprises works at three main locations along the Glenelg Tram Line.

Modifications of the existing tram overpass at South Road (SRTO) are required to facilitate construction of the T2D Project.

The level crossings at Marion Road, Cross Road (MAC) and Morphett Road (MTX) will also be replaced by tram overpasses, removing the interface with road traffic and creating new public spaces beneath.

Other associated works include intersection upgrades on the adjacent major roads (at MAC and MTX), tram depot upgrades at Glengowrie and a temporary tram maintenance depot on the edge of the Adelaide CBD.

1.1. Project Background

The Tram Grade Separation Projects comprises works at three main locations along the Glenelg Tram Line, but also includes some other works along the tram corridor. Modifications of the existing tram overpass at South Road (SRTO) are required to facilitate construction of the T2D Project. These works are funded as part of the North-South Corridor Project, and forms part of the early works upgrade scheme needed to provide a widened South Road corridor to suit the overall T2D works.
The level crossings at Marion Road, Cross Road (MAC) and Morphett Road (MTX) will also be replaced by tram overpasses, removing the interface with road traffic and creating new public spaces beneath. These works will improve network efficiency and safety at their locations for all users.
Other associated works include intersection upgrades on the adjacent major roads (at MAC and MTX), tram depot upgrades at Glengowrie and a temporary tram maintenance depot on the edge of the Adelaide CBD, which will be required during the main occupation.
The Marion Road and Cross Road level crossing removals are jointly funded between the Australian and South Australian governments (50:50 split), separate to the North-South Corridor and SRTO works.

1.2. Project Location

The Tram Grade Separation Projects are split over three main locations:

  1. The existing South Road Tram Overpass at Glandore
  2. Marion Road and Cross Road level crossing removals at Plympton
  3. Morphett Road level crossing removal at Morphettville
Other works locations include:

  1. Construction of a temporary tram maintenance depot on Peacock Road (on the edge of the Adelaide CBD)
  2. Installation of new turnbacks near Goodwood Road (at Forestville)
  3. Upgraded access into the Glengowrie Tram Depot (part of the MTX works)
  4. Signalling upgrades along the tram corridor, including a new optic fibre route from the Glengowrie Depot to Victoria Square
All permanent works are located along the Glenelg Tram Line, between the Adelaide CBD and Glenelg.

1.3. Project Benefits

These projects are expected to improve safety for all users by removing conflict points and the overall efficiency and travel time reliability of transport movements (thereby supporting economic growth). The project is also expected to provide benefit to the community by improving amenity, connectivity and liveability, promoting a stronger connected community currently severed by the Glenelg Tram Line.

Removing these level crossings will:

  • Reduce travel times for motorists, buses, freight and airport traffic
  • Improve safety for local residents, motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and tram drivers
  • Provide new, safer and more accessible tram stops with improved pedestrian access
  • Improve connection and sense of community between the suburbs either side of the tram line
  • Create new community open space for locals to enjoy
1.4. Project Objectives

The objectives of this project are to:

  • Improve the efficiency and reliability of transport movements to enhance economic productivity
  • Improve safety for all users (private and commercial vehicles, public transport, pedestrians and cyclists)
  • Promote sustainable urban growth and attractive liveable communities with integrated community focused design
  • Promote low emission and healthy transport choices through improved public transport and active travel connectivity
