Enabling Aboriginal Participation in the Disaster Adaptation plan process

Project goals

The outputs include the following:

1. Stakeholder Identification: Identify relevant stakeholders in 5 regions (Hunter, Central West, Illawarra Shoalhaven, South East, Riverina Murray) and deliver an engagement plan.

2. Culturally Appropriate Engagement: Facilitate engagement based on the plan, with RA staff attending.

3. Engagement Report: Document consultation findings in a report.

4. Engagement Guidance Document

• Define roles for Traditional Owners, Aboriginal knowledge holders, and scientists in regional DAP steering committees.
• Include principles and values for effective engagement.
• Recommend methods to increase Aboriginal participation in DAP governance.
• Propose methods for Aboriginal community participation throughout the DAP process.
• Provide guidance on messaging the value of a DAP.
• Consider involving Local Aboriginal Land Councils in Local Emergency Management Committees.
