2025 Rail Culvert Cleaning Program
Tender ID: 565908
Tender Details
Tender Description
RTIO’s Pilbara Rail Network comprises in excess of 1700km of rail infrastructure and over 2500 culverts. Detailed Visual (Level 2) inspections of all culverts undertaken on a bi-annual basis have identified approximately 40 priority locations where culvert cleaning works are required to remove sediment and/or blockages.
Culverts across the network have had infrequent clearing since they were first constructed, with some of the sites originally being constructed in the 1960’s. Due to varying amounts of upstream bedload and water velocities debris has accumulated and, in some instance, become hard packed inside the culvert barrels. Where maintenance is not undertaken routinely and timely, sediment / debris build up can lead to instances of track washaway / damage and other minor structural defects such as corrosion where sediment is in contact with the culvert barrels for some extended time.
The locations requiring remediation span across RTIO rail network. Typically, culverts comprise of predominately corrugated steel pipe (Helcor or Multi-plate) with a range of diameters and lengths.
The general objective of the remedial works is to reinstate the integrity of the culverts to support the operation of the rail network. Details of the typical scope of works for the works comprises but is not limited to;
• Supply of all associated machinery / equipment to suitably clear debris from culverts;
• Removal of debris from around the inlet and outlet area that may obstruct inflow and outflow;
• Provide suitable QA/QC reports for each culvert location at the completion of each site showing completeness of works and also identifying any defects following the removal of debris (in particular corrosion).
