Background:

The Dalby Regional Saleyards is a large one day selling centre for livestock, with cattle sales exceeding on average yarding’s of 4,400 head each week. Cattle sales are held on Wednesdays, with intermittent special sales during the year.

First established in 1940, the Dalby Saleyards holds an average of fourty-nine weekly sales each year involving eight (8) livestock agencies and attracting a variety of buyers from small growers to commercial meatworks. The Saleyards draws livestock from throughout Queensland as well as part of New South Wales, South Australia, and Northern Queensland. A lot of our strength lies simply in our location: at the junction of three national highways, and located close to the railway line, we’re positioned to offer our buyers and sellers superior access.

The mandatory implementation for a National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) for cattle was introduced in Queensland in 2004. NLIS involves electronic identification of cattle, sheep and goats by tagging with approved NLIS ear tags or rumen boluses and a matching ear tag.

All movements of cattle sales, transfer to other properties or meatworks are required to be recorded on the NLIS database.

The Dalby Saleyards require a contractor to provide the NLIS scanning, retagging of faulty or lost tags and update data collection on the NLIS database. This ensures that the movements of sale livestock can be traced, especially contributing to lifetime traceability which is important for biosecurity purposes.
