Queensland Rail has several truss bridges across northern Queensland with deteriorating protective coating. Due to the age, geographical location, and condition of the protective coating system of the bridges, accelerated deterioration of the steel is occurring. Corrosion and section loss are evident on all structures due to the failed protective coating system. If the deterioration continues without paint maintenance, bridges will become unserviceable before reaching their design life.
