Higher Education Eminent Advisor

⁠⁠⁠A Joint Committee on the Establishment of Adelaide University (the Committee) was formed on 6 July 2023 to inquire into and report on the proposed new Adelaide University. The Committee resolved that on the balance of evidence received, it considered that the economic and social interests of the State of South Australia would likely be advanced by the establishment of Adelaide University.

In November 2023, legislation to establish Adelaide University was passed in State Parliament, paving the way for the new institution to open in 2026. It is envisaged that the creation of Adelaide University will optimise local investment, translation and commercialisation of research, and economic growth to support and contribute to the state’s economic development priorities. This aligns with the vision of the South Australian Economic Statement, particularly the mission to ‘build South Australia’s talent’ through the development of a workforce with future-ready skills, ensuring the state is well equipped to maximise opportunities in defence and other key industries.

The South Australian Government announced that it would appoint an independent Advisor with higher education experience to work with the Government and the Universities, as well as other key stakeholders including staff and student representatives, throughout the implementation phase.

The Advisor will provide independent advice and recommendations to the Government on the measurement and achievement of proposed economic benefits, possible impacts on staff and students, and risk management measures.
