Bastyan Power Station is located next to Lake Roseberry and was commissioned in 1983. It houses a single Fuji Francis turbine coupled to a Fuji generator (81 MW, 94 MVA).

The Bastyan T2 transformer is a 95/120MVA, 220/11-13.8-18kV ABB Generator Transformer with an on-load tap changer. It serves as a system spare for many of Hydro Tasmania's high value production lines such as Gordon, Reece and John Butters.

The transformer is 21 years old and due to a rapidly developing fault, was required to be removed from service. A heating fault was considered likely on this transformer due to two previous failures related to overheating and minor abnormalities found in oil analysis results from recent years. The first fault occurred in 2006, just three years after it was commissioned, where heavy carbonisation had occurred in the low voltage selection cleats. The second failure occurred in 2012 and was due to poor crimp joints within the winding.

The fault identification and repair is to be carried out to the specifications outlined in the Tender documentation.
