Tender Description

Antarctica New Zealand is currently upgrading the Ross Island Wind Energy (RIWE) system, the grid that connects Scott Base, the Crater Hill Wind Farm and the United States’ McMurdo Station.

Antarctica New Zealand is seeking tenders for a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to provide both grid stability, energy storage and virtual synchronous generation capability. The successful supplier will be required to develop, fabricate, install and commission a BESS for Ross Island, Antarctica.

The RIWE system assets include:

• 3 x Emergya Wind Technologies (EWT) 1MW wind turbines.

• A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

• A new Microgrid Control System (MCS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and historian (AVEVA PI) system to control and monitor the status of the RIWE network.

• Power Plants A & B at McMurdo Station (United States of America’s Antarctica base on Ross Island)

• New Scott Base (New Zealand’s Antarctica base).

The existing assets (3 x Enercon E-33 wind turbines and PowerStore) will also be removed as part of the RIWE upgrade project.
