Construction - Brick Kilns Precinct Upgrade - Sydney Park, St Peters

⁠⁠⁠The Council of the City of Sydney ("the City") invites Expressions of Interest for the carrying out of construction works for the Sydney Park Brick Kilns Precinct Renewal project in accordance with this request.

The Sydney Park Brick Kilns Precinct constitutes a powerful and striking landmark that contributes to the streetscape of the Princes Highway and Sydney Park Road, as well as Sydney Park. The chimneys have been iconic symbols of the St Peters area since their construction.

The condition of the kiln and chimney structures is under constant review and to date the City has undertaken a series of minor works projects to ensure the stability of the structures and maintain public safety. The most recent structural assessment was completed in 2020. Public access to sections of the precinct is currently closed.

This project intends to:

- Deliver a holistic upgrade of the Brick Kilns Precinct and adjoining public domain and landscape areas to celebrate and integrate the kilns and chimneys as structures in the landscape of Sydney Park.

- Conserve the existing brick kilns comprising of three smaller down draught kilns and two larger kilns referred to as the Hardy Patent and Hoffman Kilns and interpretation of demolished buildings as part of the landscape design.

- Improve the connection of the Brick Kilns Precinct into the wider context of Sydney Park whilst conserving and celebrating the heritage significance of the precinct.

- Restore and/ or introduce and display elements of moveable heritage technology from the previous brick kilns operations into the precinct as part of the heritage interpretation strategy.

Key design aspects include:

- Respecting and retaining the heritage significance of the Precinct.

- Enhancing the ground plane as a setting for the kilns and chimneys.

- Reinstating the industrial character of the former brickworks whilst acknowledging the importance of Sydney Park as a destination and established parkland.

- Improving the connections between the Precinct and the broader network of Sydney Park and strengthening the corner as the interface with the highway.

- Consideration of the needs and requirements of all users, as well as events and large groups.

- Upgrade of existing services to comply with current code and safety requirements.

The City is seeking to engage a suitably qualified and experienced Contractor to undertake the construction and delivery of the project works.
