Expressions of Interest for natural burial site in Byron Shire

⁠⁠⁠Council is asking for Expressions of Interest from people interested in selling or donating land for a natural burial site.

The vision for a natural burial ground is an area that will combine a natural burial ground with a bush regeneration site where the community can have input into the management of environmental outcomes.

 Key considerations for suitable land:

• Zoned RU2
• Ideally degraded paddock with no or minimal trees.
• Have road access and space for parking.
• Be accessible to people living with disability.
• Sufficient soil depth to allow the top of a casket to be at least 900mm below the natural surface of the ground.
• Location would be away from residential areas and not visible from neighbouring areas.
• Have a minimum 100m separation from water courses, drinking water supplies or domestic water supplies.
• No bushfire or flood risk.
• Not a heritage site, heavily vegetated or habitat for threatened species.
• Have no existing structures that are costly to remove or cannot used.
